Masterclasses: Philip Hoffman & Jean-Gabriel Périot

This year DocPoint Masterclass consists of two parts. Both masterclasses are held on Friday 29.1.2016 at Korjaamo, Kulmasali, Töölönkatu 51 a–b.

Masterclass I: Philip Hoffman

Hoffman_masterclass-kuva_katalogiinThis year DocPoint presents an “intro-retrospective” from the Canadian documentary film maker Philip Hoffman (b. 1955), who has had a great influence on many Finnish film makers. Hoffman was a visiting professor in the Helsinki University of Art and Design in the early 1990’s, and his experimental documentaries and workshops left a permanent mark on the Finnish documentary landscape. He is especially known for documentaries that mix documentary and fictional material with personal content. Hoffman teaches film making in York University.

Masterclass II: Jean-Gabriel Périot

A_GERMAN_YOUTH_ohjaaja_PeriotJean-Gabriel Périot (b. 1974) is a master of montage, whose cinematic language is a result of truly innovative use of archive materials. Periot’s work escapes definition and finds itself between documentary, animation and experimental film making. The prominent subjects in his films are violence and history.

Périot is known for his short films, of which Poor Little White Girls (2015) is seen in DocPoint 2016 as a part of The Darkness Collection. DocPoint’s main seminar, From Activism to Terrorism, is built around his first feature-length documentary A German Youth. Périot’s films have received numerous awards, among which is the Grand Prix in 2006 at the Tampere Film Festival.

Masterclass registration opens on January 8th and closes on 27th at 16:00. Registration is needed for attendance.
