Tell Spring Not to Come This Year

In this film by Saeed Taji Faroukyn and Michael McEvoy, Afghanistan shows itself as an unforgiving pit of quicksand, abandoned by the Western countries. The focus is on the national army of Afghanistan, ANA. Since 2014, ANA has been on its own, engaged in a war against the Taliban, with the future of a shattered nation at stake. Central figures within this documentary include the Captain of ANA’s Third Battalion, Jalaluddin, and the Private Sunnatullah. Their personal stories, their attitudes, and even their motives for defending their nation are very different. Jalaluddin feels responsibility for the future of his home country and for his soldiers, whereas Sunnatullah’s fight against the Taliban is merely a way to get by in a country that does not offer other possibilities for a structured life.

Tell Spring Not to Come This Year moves relentlessly and fearlessly into the midst of the fighting and depicts war with more realism than the most gruesome Hollywood productions.
